Storm Brewing: Heavy Rains, Wind, Electrical Service Loss Possible

Brace yourselves Greenwich for another significant storm with high winds and heavy rain.

According to the NWS, on Tuesday there will be rain, mainly after noon. High near 49. Light east wind increasing to 9 to 14 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Then on Tuesday night the forecast is for 2-3 inches of rain, with thunderstorms also possible after 1:00am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Temps should rise to about 53° by 1:00am. Expect wind with gusts as high as 45 miles per hour.

Wednesday there is a 30° chance of rain before 1:00pm, then partly sunny and breezy, with temps falling to around 43° by 5:00pm.

Eversource is encouraging customers to prepare for the storm by assembling or restocking a storm kit which should include essentials like flashlights, batteries, water, non-perishable foods, any needed medications, pet food and other necessities. In addition, make sure cell phones and devices are fully charged, create an emergency plan with family members and prepare to check on elderly neighbors and friends.

A message from the First Selectman around 4pm said:

Greenwich could potentially see heavy rain and wind starting Tuesday evening into Wednesday and First Selectman Fred Camillo said residents should be prepared for potential power outages and be cautious when out traveling during the storm.
According to the National Weather Service, a flood watch and a high wind warning will be in effect starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday until 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

Rain could be heavy during this period, with potentially two to three inches of rain falling, and wind could gust as high as 48 miles per hour.

Residents should be prepared for possible multi-day electrical service interruptions. Flooding is also considered a possibility because in addition to the heavy rains, warm temperatures will be melting the snow that fell over the weekend.

Please use caution and stay off the roads during the storm if possible. And if you must travel, please do so carefully. For people who lose electrical service, they will be able to use the Margenot Atrium at the Public Safety Complex to charge devices and people can also use Town Hall, the libraries and the civic center during normal hours of operation.
Updates will be provided as needed during the storm.
