Rocco “Shabby” Chiappetta passed away after a brief illness on April 30, 2022. He was 87 years old.

Born in Cos Cob on August 17, 1934, he was the Son of the late Rocco Chiappetta and Anna (Melsenti) Chiappetta.

He attended Greenwich Schools, and worked for the Town of Greenwich, Highway Department, from 1964 to 1985.

Also, he worked for the Parks and Recreation Department, and was a well know fixture on the softball fields throughout the town. He umpired games for kids and adults in Town Leagues, for more than 50 years. In addition to soft ball and baseball, he officiated basketball games and worked for the then Boys Club of Greenwich, supervising evening activities for Greenwich youth.

He was well known for his controversial and strict rules on the playing field, and many humorous and heated discussions amongst parents and players at the after game gatherings.

Rocco is survived by his wife, Eileen (MacElroy) Chiappetta, Son Rocco (Rick) and Daughter-in-law Heather Kriskey Chiappetta, his Daughter Lee Anna Whitely and Son-in-law Bob, and 5 Grandchildren. Also surviving him are his sisters, Marie Chiappetta (Chippy-deceased), and Jane Carriero (Joe), Sister-in-law Brenda MacElroy Petrizzi (Bobby), many nieces, and Great Nieces and Nephews.

More than anything, Shabby was known for his great love for his family, and their love for him. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday May 5 at 11:00am at St. Roch Church, St. Roch Avenue, Greenwich. Burial will be private.
