Alfred Joseph DiSapio, 89

Alfred Joseph DiSapio, age 89, a lifelong resident of the Chickahominy section of Greenwich, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2022 in Greenwich.

Alfred was born on May 7, 1933 to Angelo and Francesca Cicirello DiSapio.

After graduating from Greenwich High School in 1953, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, in Company “C”, 86th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Math and Chemistry from the University of Bridgeport. In 1955, Alfred began his career as a Chemist with Alpha Molykote, which was acquired by Dow Corning Corporation.

He continued as a Chemist with Dow Corning specializing in the global Personal Care industry. He developed and commercialized applications for silicone technology and holds several national and international patents on silicones in cosmetics and toiletries. Several of his patents were used on the space shuttle and are still in use by NASA.

After 40 years of service, he retired from Dow Corning as a Senior Scientist of Development in 1995, and went on to become a private consultant.

Alfred was Fellow and past President of the American Society of Cosmetic Chemists, having served in several local and national positions, and was published extensively for the society. He was a member of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists; and the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association.

He was a member of the Church of St. Roch, and served as Parish Trustee, Finance Committee Chairman, and Feast Chairman for many years.

He was a founding member of the Chickahominy Neighborhood Association, a member of the Greenwich Inlands and Wetlands Commission, a past chairman of the Family Council at the Nathaniel Witherell, a member of the RTM, and was an official member of The American Legion for his war-time service.

Alfred (also known as Sonny to his family) married the love of his life, Shirley Doran, on New Year’s Eve 1954.

He is survived by his daughters, Diane Warzoha, Denise Grabarz, Brenda Hansen; sons-in-law Michael Grabarz, Albert DiBella, Robert Hansen; grandchildren, Stephen, Daniel (Kathryn), Meghan, Nicole, Kendall, Christopher, Tyler, Zachary, Anthony; and his great-grandchildren, Gavin and Layla. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Joseph (Jane) Doran, Alan Doran, andsister-in-law Debra (Wayne) Kelly, and by many nieces and nephews who will miss his support and guidance.

Alfred was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley; his daughter, Laura DiBella; and his son-in-law, Daniel Warzoha. He was also predeceased by his siblings and their spouses, Mary (Joe) Caputo, Kay (George) Mills, Josephine

(Anthony) Cascio, and Charles (Helen) DiSapio. Above all, Alfred loved spending time with family, working on home projects, gardening, traveling and playing golf with friends. He was well-known for his tomato garden and hosting family gatherings under the grapevine and during Christmas.

The family would like to thank his incredible caregivers, Henrietta Andre, Veronica, Elise, and Ashley, as well as his team at Greenwich Hospital. A special thank you to Sydney Surrago.

A Roman Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, December 17 at the Church of St. Roch.
