LETTER: Fazio Displays Leadership on Women’s Issues

Submitted by Bonnie Jean MacDermotRoe, Old Greenwich

To the Editor,

As a Democrat and a woman, I have confidence in Sen. Ryan Fazio and his leadership on women’s issues. The attacks from his opponent are truly misleading.

Ryan believes in keeping abortion legal in the state of Connecticut. In addition, he is an advocate of improving contraceptive access and assuring higher safety and health standards for surgical abortions. He introduced a bill himself in January to improve women’s access to birth control. When it comes to abortions, I think we can all agree that the best goal is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and Ryan feels strongly that education and access to affordable contraception can help in achieving this goal, while also keeping the procedure legal in the state.

Ryan has taken a leadership role in many issues that impact women, children, and all citizens of our district and state, really. He co-wrote and passed SB2 to improve student mental health by introducing and evaluating new programs and policies toward cell phones and mental health education in schools. He also co-sponsored HB5001 which will improve access to mental health care in our state.

He has never shied away from offering his voice or seeking solutions for all of our state’s problems. He is a vocal advocate for school choice, curriculum transparency and a civic curriculum requirement. He has supported our police to keep our streets safe and take illegal guns off the streets and has taken steps to reform the 8-30g law and offer better solutions on affordable housing. He believes in and supports our business community, especially small businesses, many of them run by women.

Ryan Fazio stands behind the women in this community. He is committed to making our state better for all citizens. He has my support and I hope you will join me.
