Camillo Designates Oct 17 as Greenwich Police Dept 130th Anniversary Day

Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo designated October 17 as Greenwich Police Dept 130th Anniversary Day. In a proclamation, Camillo said that in 1896, the Town of Greenwich appointed paid watchmen to patrol stores along Greenwich Avenue, establishing the foundation of organized law enforcement in our community.

Over the ensuing 130 years, the Greenwich Police Department has grown and evolved into one of Connecticut’s leading municipal law enforcement agencies, serving more than 63,000 residents across 47.8 square miles of land and 32 miles of coastline.

Generations of Greenwich police officers have served our Town with courage, professionalism, integrity and an unwavering commitment to protecting life and property, preserving the public peace and ensuring the safety and well-being of all who live, work and visit here.

Since 1963, the Greenwich Police Department Scholarship Fund has provided financial assistance to the children of active Greenwich police officers, helping generations of students pursue undergraduate education and prepare for their futures, including eight current GPD members, which is a powerful testament to the Fund’s lasting impact and the GPD’s enduring tradition of service.

Members of the Greenwich community will gather on Oct 17 for the 130th Anniversary Greenwich Policeman’s Ball to honor the Department’s distinguished history, celebrate those who serve today and raise essential funds to continue the Fund’s mission.

This historic anniversary provides an opportunity for the entire Town of Greenwich to express its profound gratitude to all current and former members of the GPD and to remember with reverence those officials who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community.
