Gofer Ice Cream announced it has responded to the building fire at its original shop at 522 E Putnam Ave on Oct 21, 2019.  The seasonal satellite shop located at 551 E Putnam Ave, in Cos Cob near River Road was able to be re-opened within a few days of the tragic event.

“We were fortunate to be able to respond quickly to still be able to serve the community while the weather is still agreeable,” said Jay Ragusa Gofer Ice Cream’s Founder. “We do plan on rebuilding our Greenwich shop if it all works out.:

Ragusa said the shop sustained significant smoke damage, meaning a full rebuild would be required.

“Re-opening the seasonal shop will not only allow the business to continue, it allows for jobs for all of the crew that count on Gofer being there,” he added.

The Gofer Ice Cream shop in Greenwich was the first Gofer Ice Cream. The concept was first conceived of in 1998 by Jay Ragusa while in Business School. In 2003, the ideal location in the Indian Field Plaza was discovered and built by the Ragusa Family.

It has been open almost everyday since, until last Monday night’s fire. The successful brand has been serving the Fairfield County community for over seventeen seasons, though now five locations, and it has become a local favorite for many. In 2019 a new company “Gofer Franchise Systems”  was formed to focus on expanding via franchising the concept beyond Fairfield County.

“Now that this store is re-opened we can refocus on expanding the now proven Gofer Ice Cream concept through more area shops in the coming years.” Ragusa added. The team has been working with Franchise Industry veteran Gary Occhiogrosso, of Gofer Franchise Growth Solutions, since mid Summer preparing to launch franchise marketing.
