The turnout of more than a thousand people at the No Kings rally in Greenwich sent a powerful message: residents are not okay with the dismantling of our democracy and the assault on our rights now unfolding under the Trump administration. People are awake, alarmed, and ready to act.
Students of democracy recognize the signs of authoritarianism—and they’re all flashing bright red right now:
-
Pardons for the president’s friends convicted of crimes and prosecutions of those who dared to oppose him;
-
Efforts to censure and control universities, cultural institutions, corporations, and law firms;
-
Attacks on the press, including pressure to silence television hosts;
-
National Guard occupation of cities run by the president’s opponents;
-
The firing of civil servants who express independent thought;
-
Members of our communities, including many U.S. citizens, being rounded up and disappeared.
Yet as our democratic house burns, Greenwich’s Republican officials behave as if nothing is wrong. Not a word of concern. Not a whisper of dissent. Instead, they have been following the national playbook—defunding public education, denying climate change while blocking renewable energy projects and flood protection, and rewarding friends through political patronage and cronyism.
If you, too, refuse to accept this erosion of our freedoms, you can act right now. Change begins here, in our town. This Election Day, November 4, vote for the Democratic slate—Row A—for leaders who will defend the rule of law, uphold checks and balances, and honor the democratic traditions that define us.
