LETTER: Karen Hirsh would be an asset to the BOE

Letter to the editor from Janet Stone McGuigan

All three Democratic candidates for the Board of Education are excellent.  Congratulations to the DTC on a job well done!

In particular, having worked closely with Karen Hirsh on the Greenwich PTA Council, I can attest to her dedication, experience and leadership.  For years, as PTA President of Glenville School, as a Board Member of the PTA Council, and most recently as the President of the PTA Council, Karen attended virtually every BOE business and work meeting, retreat and special meeting, in its entirety.

In her comments to the BOE, Karen has always advocated that the public be given adequate opportunity to provide informed input and she practiced what she preached.  Taking great care to seek input from Council as she crafted those speeches, Karen consistently addressed supporting the needs of the whole child, and of every child.

Committed and open minded, Karen takes the time to do her homework so that she fully understands the issues.  Ask Karen about a monitoring report, the strategic plan, the master facilities plan, she has read it and is ready to discuss it.  Her educational background in early childhood development, along with her professional experience in the field of communication, positions her to truly help the BOE present its vision for the Greenwich Public Schools.  Karen is collaborative, and while she is sharp on issues, has appropriately never let politics play a part in her advocacy for our schools.

Please vote on November 5th.  Our children’s education is vitally important.  We ask the BOE to take its work seriously, and in turn the BOE needs to know the Greenwich community is engaged in this work.  Our children are watching us.
