LETTER: Candidates for Town Clerk Should be Based on Qualifications, not Party Affiliation

Submitted by Elizabeth Perry, Greenwich

On November 2, Greenwich voters will elect a new Town Clerk. In a perfect world, the candidates for Clerk would campaign based on qualifications, not party affiliation. It should not matter whether the person responsible for registering birth certificates, processing permits, or recording land transactions has a D or an R after their name on the ballot. What does matter is whether it is easy, pleasant, and efficient to interact with the Clerk’s office.

I will be voting for Molly Saleeby for Town Clerk. Saleeby is running because she wants us all to have a Clerk’s Office for the 21st century. She will modernize procedures. She has researched best-practices at the Clerk’s Offices in other Connecticut towns and is committed to bringing Greenwich up to speed using innovations our peer towns have already implemented.

She also knows that when someone prefers to do their business in person, the Clerk’s Office should have extended hours and a friendly face to greet you. Importantly, Saleeby brings a professional background in stellar customer service–she even won an award for customer service during her years working at WNET Channel 13.

A volunteer with countless organizations in town, Saleeby is a dedicated public servant whom I have come to know and respect through our work together on the RTM. She listens to everyone, she is responsive, and she gets things done. She is the vice-chair of District 8 and serves on the Budget Overview Committee. She is universally respected by fellow members of the RTM because of her temperament and work ethic. That is what she will bring to her leadership of the Clerk’s Office.

Saleeby is running as the Democratic candidate. Again, the Town Clerk should not be a political position, but the candidates must run for office that way. The Republican Town Committee has put forward a candidate who, in an interview with the Greenwich Time, noted that her main qualification is that she has used the services of the Clerk’s Office as a real estate agent.

The choice for Greenwich voters is clear.

Saleeby has a demonstrated track record, a commitment to customer-service, and a fresh perspective. Regardless of your party affiliation, I urge you to vote for Molly Saleeby for Town Clerk.
