Submitted by Indivisible Greenwich co-founder Nerlyn Pierson on behalf of Indivisible Greenwich for CT Indivisible groups
Minority Leader Schumer, as chair of the Democratic Caucus in the Senate, broke with the vast majority of his caucus to allow a GOP funding bill to advance, with no restrictions on the ongoing efforts from Donald Trump and Elon Musk to dismantle the federal government and with no guarantees the Trump Administration will spend any money as appropriated.
Indivisible Groups across Connecticut issued the following statement: Under Senator Chuck Schumer’s Leadership, Senate Democrats just surrendered a rare moment of leverage to rein in the chaos and harm of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Congressional Republicans. By voting to advance the GOP government funding bill, rather than demanding or receiving anything in return, Schumer handed more power to the extremists destroying the government. This was not just a strategic mistake – it was a demonstration that Schumer is not prepared to lead the Democratic opposition to fascism and protect our democracy. The
overwhelming majority of Democrats stood in unified opposition to this bill and yet Senator Schumer voted to support it. We thank him for his years of service, and now call on him to step aside as minority leader.
The undersigned Indivisible groups, and their members, are unified in fighting for our democracy and opposing the existential threat posed by Trump/Musk and the architects of Project 2025. We need a unified opposition party to do the same. We have lobbied our elected –representatives to stand up and fight for us, including by voting against the GOP government funding bill without ironclad guarantees on how that money would be spent. We are grateful for the unified votes in the House against this bill and thank Representatives Joe Courtney, Rosa DeLauro, Jahana Hayes, Jim Himes, and John Larson for their votes.
We are also grateful that both Senator Blumenthal and Senator Murphy voted against the bill in the Senate and we ask that they join us in our call that Senator Schumer step aside from Senate leadership.
Indivisible groups across Connecticut are working to defend our democracy against assaults on voting rights, civil rights, a free press, free speech and other fundamental freedoms fundamental to a democracy.
We do not come to this decision lightly – for the country, or for our democracy. But the stakes are too high, and we need leaders who are willing to fight as hard as we are. Schumer should step aside as Minority Leader so another Democrat who’s willing to lead the opposition can step up to take his place.
