We would do well on this “Liberation Day” to remember the travails of the 1760s and 1770s when the North American colonies rose up against the duties or tariffs being imposed by the British Parliament on imports to the colonies in order to raise revenue.
The slogan of the day was “No taxation without representation”, as the colonies were not represented in Parliament.
Today, our main quarrel is not with the legislative branch but with the executive, which is bypassing Congress, in which we are represented, by acting through executive orders. Again, a kind of taxation without representation.
But, nationwide protest is building. Rocky times are coming.
