Chaney: Support Your Public School’s Media Centers

Submitted by Bob Chaney

Media assistants are the backbone of daily operations in our public school Media Centers. They handle everything from checking out materials and reshelving books to helping students with technology as well as managing engaging programming for these students in our public schools. While their roles are critical, they are often underappreciated and, more importantly, overworked.

In April this year, the Republicans on the BET used their tie breaking vote to reduce the school budget by 4.2 million dollars. This cut left many assistant media specialists in the public schools across town in chaos, with many being let go or moved from the school where they have been working for many years. Some assistant media specialists are now working part time at two different elementary  schools. As a result, the institutional knowledge those employees once contributed to the school and students has effectively been lost.

As a Dad with two boys in the Greenwich Public Schools, I volunteer my time at the Greenwich High School media center. Volunteering can not only ease the burden on staff, but also help foster a deeper connection between the community and the public schools.

The school media centers are about more than just books—they are places of learning, opportunity, and equity. Unfortunately, with the recent budget reduction, volunteers are no longer a luxury. They are a necessity.

If you have an hour or two a week to spare, I strongly urge you to reach out to the school or schools where your kids attend and see if they need volunteers. You will surely be able to find a role that fits your skills and schedule. Even small commitments can make a big impact.

Our media assistants work tirelessly for the good of our community. It’s time we show up for them.
