BYERS: This ‘globalist’ shibboleth

Submitted by Candace Byers, Greenwich

Every human being alive is a globalist, ie a resident of the globe. We all live within the context defined by planet earth. I challenge GOP members to look in your frig, kitchen cabinets, closets, garages, the cell phone in your hands and tell me that everything you own is made or influenced by ‘the broader Greenwich’. Do you think the interest you’ve earned on investments, or charged on your mortgage is calculated by ‘the broader Greenwich’? C’mon! Our food, fuel, medicine, housing clothing AND WEATHER come from all over the globe. Remember how the Canadian forest fires affected our very breath? We live within a global context with every breath we take.

NO! This ‘globalist’ shibboleth is nothing more than the GOP strategy to instill deep, primal fear in the electorate. Look at their campaign speeches. Does any GOP candidate speak of hope, prosperity, renewal? Are they fighting to give you a sane health care system? Improved wages for workers? Nope. They think it’s great that states are removing child labor laws so they can pay children to work in dangerous factories, rather than pay adults a living wage. They trashtalk our country and then say Democrats hate America. They want you riled up against libraries, LGBTQ people, BIPOC people, to hide the contributions (graft) they receive from billionaires and CEOs wanting to avoid taxes and EPA regulations.

Why did Columbus sail the ocean blue? Queen Isabella needed cash. That was the beginning of North America’s inclusion in a modern global economy. Way before that the Incas, Aztec, and Mayans traded up and down from Central to South America. How did the American South become rich on cotton, by supplanting Egyptian cotton. Plantation owners sold their cotton to England which had invented high speed looms. A global economy. Does the GOP see us going back to being hunter gatherers?

Why wouldn’t you want Scott Kalb or any candidate who had experience working with the huge issues that face our globe? Every aspect of all our lives is affected by what is happening in our globe, economically, medically, socially, financially and environmentally. Why wouldn’t you want someone familiar with what is happening within your HOME, PLANET EARTH, THIS GLOBE in which ‘the broader Greenwich’ resides.
