Beyond Petitions and Protests: The Art of Being an Authentic Ally

On Thursday, June 11, YWCA Greenwich will host an important
zoom conversation with Jenna Arnold, author of Raising Our Hands: How White Women Can Stop Avoiding Hard Conversations, Start Accepting Responsibility, and Find Our Place On the New Frontlines, and Denise Hamilton, Founder and CEO of WatchHerWork.

The event will feature a live zoom conversation between Jenna Arnold and Denise Hamilton discussing how individuals can contribute and make an authentic impact on systematic racism.

Jenna Arnold is an American businessperson and serial entrepreneur. She is known as the co-founder of ORGANIZE, for her work at the United Nations, and most recently as a National Organizer for the 2017 Women’s March on Washington. Her book Raising Our Hands, asks white women to have a radical and honest conversation with themselves about race, identity, privilege, and power — and how they can use their influence
to take an active role in creating a better future. Her book will be available to purchase during the event.

Denise Hamilton is the Founder and CEO of WatchHerWork.com, a digital learning platform for professional women. At WatchHerWork, Denise has archived the professional experiences of hundreds of women in order to build a library of over 6,000 videos with one goal in mind: closing the gap for today’s professional women by giving them the advice they need when they need it. Denise speaks frequently on the experiences of women of color.

“This moment requires honest and sometimes uncomfortable conversations about race and systematic oppression. Consistent with YWCA Greenwich’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women, we will continue to provide community events like this that examine systemic racism and strengthen our community’s capacity to work against oppression. We will
also double down on our ongoing work across sectors in our community to change the systems that oppress and segregate black lives and all marginalized groups,” said YWCA Greenwich’s President and CEO, Mary Lee Kiernan, who will be introducing the speakers at the event on
Thursday.

The YWCA invites community members to join this important discussion on Thursday, June 11. The event will take place from 7:00-8:00 pm with a Q&A from 8:00-8:30 pm. To register for this free event, please go to ywcagrn.org/ally.
