At Old Greenwich School, 4th and 5th graders are set to perform their spring musical, Disney’s High School Musical Jr on The Frank Gasparino Stage on Thursday and Friday.
The musical is directed and choreographed by Tracy Martineau and Christina Kampler. Sets are by Jennifer Webb.
Benefiting from upbeat live music – drums by Sean Charles and keyboard by musical director Zach Kampler – over 75 students in the cast and crew share High School Musical’s themes of overcoming adversity, challenging social norms, and the power of friendship.

From the start, the stage comes alive with Wildcats cheerleaders, marching band musicians and basketball players. Characters include the delightfully conniving Sharpay Evans who has the gifted but shy new student Gabriella Montez on her radar. The painfully conflicted Troy Bolton copes with pressure from his father, the basketball coach, as Troy and Gabriella, hailing from different social groups are cast as Romeo and Juliet. Adding to the dynamic is Miss Darbus who adds the drama to the drama department.
According to Old Greenwich School Principal Dr. Jen Bencivengo, in preparation for the show the students had the opportunity to take a field trip to New York City where they participated in a 90-minute vocal and choreography workshop in Broadway rehearsal studios with Broadway teaching artists. From there, the students caught a performance of Wicked on Broadway.
“We believe theater is an an integral part of education, including both preparation and performance – whether you’re a cast member, on the crew or in the audience,” Bencivengo said. “So when the students saw the work that went into preparing for a scene and then had the opportunity to see that same number performed in Wicked on Broadway, it brought their own theater experience to life.”
