Another candidate has announced an intention to run for State Senate in the 36th district. Republican Joe Kelly announced his campaign last week, and Jill Oberlander filed as a candidate with the SEEC on Feb 27.
The seat currently held by Republican Ryan Fazio who is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Gov. Ned Lamont for Governor in November. He has represented the 36th district since 2021.
The 36th district includes Greenwich and parts of both Stamford and New Canaan.
Now Janet Stone McGuigan, a former member of the Board of Selectmen, has announced she will seek election for the job.
Stone McGuigan recently stepped down after serving two terms on the Board of Selectmen and returned to the RTM to continue to serve as Co-chair on the Sustainability Committee.
Stone McGuigan is a voting member of the Julian Curtiss School Building Committee and serves as a board member or advisor for Barbara’s House, Friends of the Wallace Senior Center, River House, Greenwich Green and Clean, Friends of Binney Park and the Greenwich Point Conservancy.
Last November, Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo issued a proclamation honoring Stone McGuigan for her four years of dedicated service on the Board of Selectmen (elected 2021, 2023), designating November 25 as “Janet Stone McGuigan Day” to recognize her commitment to the community, leadership, and integrity.
Since 2006, when her family moved to her husband’s hometown of Greenwich, Stone McGuigan has engaged in volunteer work, ultimately serving leadership positions with the Greenwich League of Women Voters, the Junior League and the Greenwich PTA Council.
In a previous life, Stone McGuigan worked as a policy analyst, and then as a mediator for federal regulatory negotiations. Specifically she worked for a non profit (formerly a program of WWF) that facilitated large scale negotiations for Federal agencies such as the EPA, NOAA and DOE, on topics including wind energy, the marine mammals protection act, drinking water and combined sewage overflow.
Stone McGuigan has degrees in civil engineering and economics from Cornell, and a master’s in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School.
Stone McGuigan said in a release on Wednesday, “Our District deserves strong, thoughtful representation in Hartford someone who will fight for our democratic principles while also tackling the issues families face every day: affordability, housing, health care, education, and the rising cost of energy.”
Her release touches on three issues:
Affordable Connecticut
“Connecticut must remain a place where families and businesses thrive. Janet supports investments in transportation, infrastructure, and innovation to attract talent, support entrepreneurs, and grow the state’s economy. Janet believes in responsible budgeting and long-term fiscal sustainability,” she said in the release.
Stone McGuigan promised to work to manage state obligations responsibly while protecting essential services.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. I will work to reduce unnecessary barriers, streamline regulations, and expand access to capital. Our governor, Ned Lamont, has done a superb job reducing our unpaid pension liabilities and
improving our credit rating.”
Smart Housing Solutions
Stone McGuigan’s release said, “The District MUST maintain local control over land use while addressing housing needs responsibly. Janet supports balanced housing solutions that preserve neighborhoods, protect the environment, and expand opportunities for working families.”
Supporting Students and Families
Stone McGuigan vowed to continue fighting for state investment in school facilities and excellent programs that help students succeed, including access to nutritious meals and a safe learning environment.
“I’m running for State Senate because I want to support the community that has given so much to my family. I’m proud of my record of getting things done, respectfully and collegially. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves, work to bring resources back to our district, and make sure Hartford spends our tax dollars wisely. During my time serving on the Greenwich Board of
Selectmen, I attended countless public meetings and worked across government to deliver results—including helping secure a $500,000 federal grant to dredge Greenwich Harbor.”
Stone McGuigan described herself as a moderate who has won broad support across party lines.
“The people of Connecticut want and deserve a government that works. A government that works for them, their children and their grandchildren. In the statehouse I will work diligently with all stakeholders and put partisan politics aside. That is what I do best.”
