Darien Homeowner Shoots at Masked Intruders Who Located Hidden Key

Darien Police on Thursday shared details of what was originally reported as a “burglary in progress” in on Five Mile River Road where the suspects located a key hidden outside and gained entry to the residence where they were confronted by the homeowner.

Originally they said that Thursday at 6:00am the they received a report of a burglary in progress at an occupied residence on Five Mile River Road. The homeowner reported that three individuals were attempting to gain entry but were confronted and subsequently fled the scene before patrol units arrived.

In their update, Darien Police said that prior to the suspects entering the home, another family member called 9-1-1 when the suspects were observed rummaging on the front porch. The homeowner then observed that at least one of the three masked suspects was armed with a handgun while they began unlawfully entering the front door to the residence.

“At this point the homeowner feared for his safety and the safety of his family which included two small children,” Darien Police said in an updated announcement on Thursday. “As the suspects began to make entry, the homeowner discharged his firearm at the suspects. The suspects then immediately fled the area.”

During their initial investigation Darien Police Detectives determined that a male juvenile potentially matching the description of one of the suspects, arrived at the Bridgeport Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound and was rushed to surgery.

The juvenile’s condition is reportedly stable at this time and Detectives continue to look into the individual’s possible involvement in the incident.

Working closely with other area police departments, the suspect vehicle used in this incident was determined to have been stolen from a residence in Fairfield prior to the incident in Darien. The vehicle has been located and has been seized as evidence by the Darien Police Department.

Darien Police thanked Bridgeport and Fairfield Police Departments for their assistance in the investigation. No further details are being released at this time.
