Snow Emergency Lifted, Make Sure to Clear Sidewalks and Don’t Push Snow into the Street

The Greenwich Board of Selectmen has voted to lift the snow emergency imposed for the weekend Nor’easter that dropped about 8 inches snow across Town.

At a special meeting Sunday afternoon, January 30, the Board unanimously voted to lift the ban, effective at 6:00pm Sunday.

The Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility will reopen to residents at 7:00am on Monday, January 31.

As a reminder, Town ordinance requires Greenwich property owners to be responsible for keeping all sidewalks along their property clear of snow and ice.

The Town of Greenwich prohibits plow contractors from pushing snow from driveways or parking lots onto Town streets. If there is no other alternative to pushing snow into the street, the private plow driver must plow off the windrow left across the street by re-plowing until the road is safe. Restaurant operators also are responsible for cleaning the sidewalk along the front of their respective property. Businesses with handicapped parking stalls in front of their storefronts are responsible for clearing access from the stall to the sidewalks.

We are requesting residents that when they are out shoveling snow from their driveways and sidewalks, to also clear nearby fire hydrants. By clearing a three-foot radius around the hydrant will help save precious time in battling a fire.

“I want to thank residents who heeded the advice to stay home for the duration of the storm. That certainly helped to make work easier for the Public Works, Parks & Recreation crews who were out clearing roads,” said First Selectman Fred Camillo. “I also thank all of our first responders and the Fleet Department employees who worked during the storm.”
