The cluster of skills we call literacy, the ability to speak clearly, listen with care, write confidently, and lose oneself in the magic of reading, is foundational in the early years. Learning to read, write, and speak expressively opens the door to deep learning, academic and social confidence, and the capacity to understand and connect with others.

At The Children’s School, the classrooms brim with books, storytelling, song, and conversation, an environment where language lives and breathes in every corner.

The school’s youngest learners discover that active listening is a form of respect and that words are powerful tools for connection. As teachers model expressive, vocabulary-rich language, children grow into confident communicators, eager to share their thoughts and ideas.

Early reading emerges naturally through multi-sensory experiences: tracing letters in sand, matching sounds to symbols, and delighting in rhyme and rhythm. As their comprehension and vocabulary grow, children are welcomed into our beautiful library and have countless opportunities to explore books, both independently and through shared read-alouds that spark curiosity and wonder.

Soon, they become writers themselves, filling the pages of illustrated stories that capture their voices and creativity—books that become treasured keepsakes. At The Children’s School, every story a child tells, every word carefully written, and every book explored becomes a step across the gateway to literacy—a journey that leads not just to knowledge, but to confidence and a lifelong love of learning.
