Town Worker Injured in Incident with Public Works Truck and Excavator

A town worker was injured when the safety on a piece of heavy equipment was accidentally released. The incident happened around 12:00 noon on Wednesday, Oct 9 at 477 Field Point Road, which is in the area of Belle Haven.

According to Greenwich Police Lt Patrick Smyth, police responded to a report of a Town of Greenwich employee who had been injured.

“Apparently, the patient was standing behind a Town of Greenwich, Department of Public Works truck assisting the operator with backing up,” Smyth explained. “The area was a busy work zone at the time with other equipment and obstacles around.”

Smyth continued, “As the truck was backing up, the operator of an excavator that was behind the truck attempted to move his mirrors to avoid being contacted when he accidentally moved the controls of his excavator, which caused the arm to move and briefly pin the patient between the truck and the excavator arm.”

Smyth said another town employee who was on the other side of the truck also assisting with it backing up, noticed the worker being pinned and immediately yelled for the operators to stop. The patient then fell to the ground with obvious signs of injury. The employee was quickly taken to the hospital emergency room for treatment and care.

The Greenwich Police Department’s Traffic Section, which investigates serious motor vehicle collisions, was called out to investigate.
