On Saturday Greenwich Police arrested a man from Chile wanted in connection to a Burglary and Larceny in Riverside.
According to Lt John Slusarz a residence was burglarized back in May 2022 and detectives who processed the scene were able to identify the suspect, Stefano Roberto Cortes-Munoz, of Santiago, Chile, then 28, through evidence he left behind.
The arrest report indicates the original incident took place on Indian Head Road in Riverside on May 18, 2022.
At the time Greenwich Police said the area had been experiencing many burglaries committed by separate criminal groups commonly called “tourist burglars.”
“The suspects enter the United States and commit several burglaries in an area, and then leave the United States, returning to their country of origin,” police said at the time, adding that that the suspects hit high-end properties in the evening hours after sunset when residents are not at home, enter through a second floor window or door, but flee without stealing property if the home is armed with an alarm.
In April 2022, Greenwich Police announced they had secured warrants for 8 burglary crews operating in Greenwich and other Fairfield and Westchester County towns.
One of the warrants was for Mr. Cortes-Munoz.
Cortes-Munoz, now 30, was being held out of state when Greenwich Police traveled to South Central Regional Jail in West Virginia to extradite him.
His bond was set at $2,500,000.
He has a date in Stamford Superior Court on Feb 5, 2024.
