Ballot Question for all CT Voters: “no-excuse absentee voting”

The ballot question: “Shall the Constitution of the State be amended to permit the General Assembly to allow each voter to vote by absentee ballot?”

According to Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas, there is a lot of misinformation out there about what this ballot question will or will not do.

“In brief, a ‘yes’ vote would allow our state legislature to consider universal access to absentee voting (joining 36 other states and DC). A ‘no’ vote means Connecticut voters would continue to need one of six specific excuses to vote by absentee ballot,” Thomas explained.

Absentee Ballots

Connecticut law allows you to receive an absentee ballot if, in your judgment, an absence from your town on Election Day prevents you from appearing at your polling place, or you are prevented from appearing at your assigned polling place on Election Day because of sickness or physical disability (not necessarily your sickness or disability), active service in the Military, religious tenets forbid secular activity on the day of the election, duties as an election official at a polling place other than your own during all of the hours of voting. To receive your absentee ballot please complete and sign an application and return it to the Greenwich Town Clerk, Jacqueline Budkins, Tel. (203) 622-7897. Email: [email protected]

Visit myvote.ct.gov/getmyab to request your online Absentee Ballot.

Voting absentee is a two-step process. You must first apply and once verified you will be MAILED a ballot which you must return by 8:00pm on Election Day.

Remember that absentee ballot offenses carry steep criminal penalties.  Be sure you know who is allowed to vote absentee and who may return your ballot.

Same Day Registration

The deadline to register was Oct 18, but Connecticut offers Same Day Registration for people voting in person. This means you can register in-person and on Election Day and vote on the same day.

This must be done at Greenwich’s Same Day Registration location, which is the Town Hall, 101 Field Point Road.
