GHS Roots & Shoots Club Food Drive: “Everybody deserves a happy Thanksgiving”

At Greenwich High School, Roots & Shoots are conducting a Thanksgiving Food Drive. What a better way for the students to demonstrate the Greenwich Schools “norms,” including Care for Self and Others.

The Roots & Shoots club students take the group’s mission to heart.

After school on Monday they organized a day’s worth of donated food into categories and created cards that will be attached to the baskets they will send to local families in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

“It is important to help people who are less fortunate through circumstances they can’t control,” said Eden Forbes, a sophomore.

Another student said she arrived from Columbia a year earlier and was new to the school as a 9th grader. “Being here one year, it’s impressive how the community helps each other. People here are empathetic.”

“Everybody deserves a happy Thanksgiving,” said Mikayla Hayes, also a sophomore.

Roots & Shoots faculty advisor, social studies teacher Jessica Somma, explained that the club is partnering with the Greenwich Dept of Human Services to provide meals and $100 Shoprite gift cards to 100 under-served families in the Greenwich community.

The food drive runs until Friday, November 21, and it is possible to donate online via MySchoolBucks Thanksgiving Food Drive online fundraiser.

Or write a check payable to “GHS” with “Roots and Shoots Thanksgiving Fundraiser” in the memo, dropped off directly at Student Activities.

On Monday, Nov 24, the club members will form an assembly line to pack the individual bags to include perishable produce and hand them off to volunteer delivery drivers who bring them to families’ doorsteps.
