The Gertrude White Gallery is proud to present “In Search of Light, Looking through a lens,” an exhibition that brings together the evocative works of two distinct yet complementary artists: Jonathan Spector and Anne Knife.
Both artists explore the interplay of light, movement, and memory, capturing fleeting moments that resonate with emotion and depth.
Spector, a surf photographer and Long Beach native, immerses himself in the raw power of the ocean year-round, capturing its untamed beauty through the lens of his Canon R5. Swimming in icy, 34° waters, often in solitude, Jonathan’s work reveals the textures and rhythm of the sea as waves crash around him.
His photographic practice is driven by a passion for motion and light, with each shot embodying the tension between the dangerous currents and the serene beauty beneath the surface.
Spector’s work not only reflects his mastery of capturing the dynamic forces of nature but also his ability to convey the quiet solitude that comes with being at one with the ocean.
In contrast, Anne Knife‘s photography and digital paintings evoke a deep sense of nostalgia and spirituality, blending the painterly aesthetics of her visual art with the intimate emotional tone of old family photos. Using untraditional elements on her computer, Anne creates dreamlike images that transport viewers to a world suspended between memory and imagination. Her work is a reflection on time, capturing the subtle beauty of light and composition while infusing each image with personal meaning. As one viewer describes, “Getting lost in a piece of Anne’s work is a suffusion of emotions and visual spirituality,” a sentiment that perfectly encapsulates the experience of engaging with her art.
Together, Knife and Spector’s works offer a poignant exploration of light and memory, revealing the depths of human experience through the lenses of motion, nostalgia, and imagination.
In Search of Light, Looking through a lens, invites viewers to connect with the unseen forces of nature and the intimate reveries of the past, encouraging a journey into both the physical and emotional realms of the human experience.
The show will be on display from Saturday, December 7 to January 1, 2025. There will be a reception on Dec 7 from 1:00-3:00pm.
