Whitby School Supports Neighbor to Neighbor with Elf Toy Drive

A student group from Whitby School known as Whitby’s Elves recently planned The Elf Toy Drive to support Greenwich Non-profit organization, Neighbor to Neighbor. The Elf Toy Drive ran beginning in early December and was co-sponsored by the Whitby Parents Association. 55 toys and games were collected, along with $371.60 from a student-led bake sale and silent auction. “Sixth grade Design brands the Cupcake Queens and Banana Splits from Space planned a bake sale that was a huge hit,” said Phil Lohmeyer, Whitby’s Design teacher and Student Activities Coordinator for the Upper School. “The sold out bake sale, along with silent auction items provided by the the P.E. Department, raised $371.60 for this worthy cause.”

The toy drive portion of the event concluded on December 8th, and all donations were delivered to Neighbor to Neighbor at 248 East Putnam Avenue with the help of 6th grader George Markov. Continue Reading →

Whitby Students Skype with Syrian Refugees

A mother and daughter forced from their home in Aleppo achieved notoriety after the mother, Fatemah (@FatemahAlabed), started a Twitter account for her daughter Bana (@AlabedBana), to document their experience of trying to simply stay alive while under constant threat of bombing. Getting Girls into Tech: Founder of ‘Girls Who Code’ Shares Advice with Greenwich Girls

Reshma Saujani who founded Girls Who Code and who has a wildly popular TED Talk “Teach Girls Bravery, Not Perfection,” addressed girls from Greenwich High School, Greenwich Academy, Stanwich School, Whitby School, Convent of the Sacred Heart and Greenwich Country Day School. Saujani urged the girls to work on becoming brave, and to embrace risk-taking and failure rather than limit themselves to what they are good at and aiming for perfection.
