500 Middle School Girls to Play Lacrosse for a Cause at Sacred Heart Greenwich

Sacred Heart Greenwich will hold its 14th annual Katie Cassidy Higgins ’96 Memorial Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday, June 4 at the school’s fields, located at 1177 King Street in Greenwich.

The tournament, popular with middle school girls’ teams, will draw 25 teams from Fairfield and Westchester Counties for a total of 500 student-athletes. It has been sold out for months. The organizers are looking forward to welcoming the teams to Sacred Heart for a day filled with lacrosse, fun and camaraderie under sunny skies.

Competition begins at 8:00am on Sacred Heart’s turf and grass fields for teams in the first session. The second session begins at 12:30pm with warm-up and then competition at 1:00 pm.

Family, friends, students and alumnae will gather to cheer on the teams and to celebrate the life of Katie and the sport she loved.

Tournament proceeds will support a four-year scholarship to attend Sacred Heart. Since its inception, the tournament has sponsored the education of four Upper School students. Families are invited to stop by to share the spirit and enthusiasm Katie Cassidy Higgins brought to Sacred Heart and its athletics program. There will be plenty to do off the field as well, with refreshments for sale and fun activities for the kids.

This tournament was established to honor the memory of Katie Cassidy Higgins ’96, her spirit, work ethic and love of athletics. Katie, a three-sport varsity athlete in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse, attended Sacred Heart from kindergarten through high school. After graduating in 1996, she went on to play lacrosse at St. Lawrence University. During her sophomore year, her life was cut short when she was killed while crossing a street on campus.

In Katie’s honor, Sacred Heart alumnae will hold their annual memorial lacrosse game at noon on the turf fields.
