Local Woman Loses $2,500 in Phone Scam

Greenwich Police released details of a financial crime that was reported to them on March 18.

According to Greenwich Police Lt Nemecek, a woman close to 90 years old on Glenville Street received a series of phone calls saying she had won a lottery.

“It’s the old sweepstakes scam,” Nemecek said. “The person received numerous phone calls telling her she had won $500,000. She sent the caller a check for $2,500, which she was told was necessary to release the funds.”

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” Nemecek said.
