Combat Knife Found in Drunk Driver’s SUV on Old Church Rd

In the early morning hours of Monday, Aug 3, Greenwich Police were dispatched to the area of Old Church Rd on the report of a possible drunk driver.

The vehicle in question, a white GMC Yukon with New Jersey plates was observed traveling north on Old Church Rd. before making a left turn onto Fairfield Rd. followed by a right turn onto North St. According to police, the rear license plate lights were blue and the car swerved in its lane and then swerved over the double yellow line on North St.

During the motor vehicle stop Greenwich Police detected the odor of that associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the driver, Brandon Sykes, 25, of 142 Northhampton Drive in Willinboro, NJ.

Sykes failed to perform  standardized field sobriety tests to standards. A check of his operators license status revealed his New Jersey license was suspended.

During the completion of an inventory of the vehicle, a large combat knife was found within the passenger compartment of the vehicle. This combat knife had a blade that was clearly in excess of four inches.

As a result of the investigation, Sykes was arrested for DUI,  Failure to Maintain Lane,  Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License,  Improper Lamp Color and Weapons in a Motor Vehicle.

Sykes was released after posting $250 bond. He has a court date on August 10 in Stamford Superior Court.
