April Fools! The Mannequins are Alive at Rummage Room

April Fool’s Day! There is a great tradition at the Rummage Room where volunteers become live mannequins all day. From noon til 1:00pm First Congregational Church Pastor Mark Montgomery split the shift with Donald Haviland.

Pastor Montgomery joked toward the end of his shift that his homemade Easter basket-slash-bonnet, lined with purple tissue paper left a colorful impression on his head.

The 1:00-2:000pm shift belonged to Ginny Breismeister and Irene Savage, whose grandson stopped by to say hello. In fact, the smaller the pedestrian, the more likely they were to notice the live mannequins.

The Women’s Fellowship of the First Congregational Church operates the Rummage Room to help support the following local, national and international charities:

  • Food Bank
  • Community Centers, Inc.
  • Child Guidance Center
  • YWCA Domestic Abuse
  • Neighbor to Neighbor
  • Family Re-Entry
  • Kids in Crisis
  • Liberation Meridian
  • Boys and Girls Club
  • Honduras Projects

There are at least two dozen other charities the shop supports, including the Bowery Women’s Mission Shelter, newly added to the roster last year.

Volunteers are the lifeline of the Rummage Room. They are asked to give four hours a week of their time, and in return are offered “friendship and the joy of feeling that you are helping to make a difference in this world.”
